About ALC

The Mission of the Albert Lea Area Learning Center (ALC) is to empower students in special circumstances to achieve personal and academic success. Serving students in grades 9-12 and those who have surpassed their expected graduation date, the ALC provides a comprehensive high school program designed to help students earn an Albert Lea Area Schools diploma.

Since the 2018-2019 school year, the ALC has offered the Early Middle College Program in partnership with Riverland Community College, allowing eligible students to concurrently enroll in college courses while completing their high school education. In addition to this, the ALC provides essential after-school and summer intervention programs, as well as credit recovery opportunities, ensuring that students have multiple pathways to academic success.

The Albert Lea ALC is proud to serve not only students from the Albert Lea Area School District but also from several neighboring districts. Founded in 1987, the ALC has a long-standing history of supporting student growth and achievement. Located at the Brookside Education Center in Albert Lea, the ALC fosters an inclusive and supportive environment where students can thrive.

A hallmark of the Albert Lea ALC experience is participation in the Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs (MAAP) STARS initiative. For over 30 years, MAAP STARS has made a significant impact on students and their advisors, offering them opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and self-esteem. At the Albert Lea ALC, students can join the MAAP STARS chapter and even take an elective class where they earn credits for their involvement in STARS activities.

As a member of the Minnesota MAAP STARS chapter, the Albert Lea ALC participates in three major statewide events each year: the Fall Leadership Conference, Legislative Day at the State Capitol, and the Spring Events Conference. These events allow students to develop leadership skills, engage in civic activities, and showcase their achievements. Additionally, the MAAP program encourages participation in regional STARS events throughout the school year, further enriching the student experience.

Graduates of the ALC have the unique opportunity to celebrate their achievements in a dedicated ALC commencement ceremony, as well as participate in the Albert Lea High School commencement. This dual celebration reflects the comprehensive support and opportunities provided by the ALC, preparing students for a successful future.
